16. Route (200 km) – Carcross

Actually we wanted to drive to Skagway, Alaska. Unfortunately the weather was to bad and the clouds blocked the view of the landscape so we decided to reverse in Carcross to Whitehorse. Carcross was originally named Caribou Crossing because of the herds of Caribous traversing the river at this place – until the white settlers came.

It should be a picturesque trip over the pass where in the year 1898 thousands of fortune seekers crossed the border to Canada to follow the goldrush in Dawson City.

Photos with the human snake that runs up the mountain are known to many. Maybe from the movie Gold Rush“ by Charlie Chaplin.

Unbelievable that the fortune seekers had to climb this mountain at least four times to transport the necessary equipment and food up the mountain.
